Skyroot, an Indian space-tech startup, achieved a significant milestone by successfully launching a test rocket carrying a 350-kilogram payload into low orbit, making it the first Indian private company to gain orbital launch capability.
This event is crucial as it allows Skyroot to enter a competitive market that includes U.S. companies like Rocket Lab and Firefly Aerospace, as well as Chinese firms. The global demand for satellite launches is increasing, with limited players capable of meeting this need, which Skyroot aims to capitalize on by starting commercial operations in 2027 and planning to conduct one launch per month.
Co-founder Naga Bharath Daka emphasized the company's focus on cost competitiveness, which has been a hallmark of India's space endeavors, particularly in comparison to Western counterparts. The market for small payload launches is projected to grow, and while Skyroot has raised $150 million since its inception in 2018, it faces challenges in securing funding compared to U.S. and Chinese firms.
However, backing from sovereign wealth funds and institutional investors indicates a growing interest in the Indian space sector.
