House Oversight Committee Questions Former JPMorgan Executive Jes Staley on Jeffrey Epstein Client Relationship

During a recent interview, House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer revealed that Jes Staley, who was the chief of investment banking at JPMorgan Chase, allegedly encouraged the bank to keep Jeffrey Epstein as a client despite existing internal warnings about Epstein's criminal background.

Comer highlighted that there were 'red flags' within JPMorgan regarding Epstein, yet Staley defended their relationship and pushed for Epstein's continued patronage.

Staley, who served as Epstein's private banker for over three decades, had a personal connection with him, as evidenced by over 1,000 emails exchanged between them, where Staley referred to Epstein as 'family.' Following his tenure at JPMorgan, Staley became CEO of Barclays but resigned in 2021 amid regulatory scrutiny over his disclosures about his relationship with Epstein.

He subsequently faced a ban from the U.K. financial industry for misleading regulators. In 2023, JPMorgan settled lawsuits related to Epstein's victims for $290 million and reached a separate $75 million settlement with the U.S. Virgin Islands, all without admitting liability.

The ongoing investigation into Staley's actions raises questions about JPMorgan's internal controls and could affect the bank's future operations and regulatory relationships
