The Television Academy and Amazon Prime Video announced a six-year exclusive global streaming deal for the Emmy Awards, which will begin with the 2027 ceremony.
This agreement allows Prime Video to stream the awards for free to audiences in over 240 countries, including nonsubscribers, effectively ending the long-standing rotation system among major broadcast networks like ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox that has been in place since at least 1994. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Cris Abrego, chair of the Television Academy, emphasized the importance of having a dedicated platform for the Emmys to enhance global reach and commitment to the Academy's mission.
This shift to streaming aligns with a broader trend as viewers increasingly move away from traditional broadcast and cable TV towards streaming services, which have been securing rights to live events, including sports and entertainment shows.
Notably, similar transitions have occurred with other major awards, such as the Oscars moving to YouTube in 2029 and Netflix acquiring exclusive rights to the SAG Awards since 2024
