French Blood Establishment Confirms Cyberattack Impacting Blood Product Storage

On Monday, the French Blood Establishment (EFS) confirmed that its cold storage units, managed by external providers, were impacted by a cybersecurity attack that raised temperatures in refrigeration systems across three sites.

The EFS clarified that it was not the direct target of the attack, but the compromised systems are crucial for storing blood products and samples before they are delivered to healthcare facilities. Fortunately, the EFS's surveillance systems responded quickly, allowing them to control the situation effectively, with no loss of blood products or samples.

The EFS has since collaborated with the French National Cybersecurity Agency (ANSSI) and the Ministry of Health to enhance monitoring and security protocols. This incident is part of a broader trend, as hundreds of supermarkets in France and other European nations also faced similar attacks, leading to significant food spoilage.

The French Health Ministry reassured that the safety of blood supplies was maintained due to the effective monitoring and alarm systems in place, as well as immediate precautionary measures taken
