Analysts Wells Fargo initiated coverage of Huntington Bancshares (HBAN) with an overweight rating and $23 target price, indicating 28% upside

Wells Fargo has initiated coverage of Huntington Bancshares with an overweight rating and a price target of $23, indicating a potential upside of approximately 28% from its recent closing price of $17.91.

Analyst Mike Mayo emphasized the relevance of Texas' booming economy, which is characterized by rapid population growth, a GDP larger than that of Canada, and the presence of 57 Fortune 500 companies. The state has also become a hub for data-center development, attracting banks and businesses relocating from other states, particularly New York.

Huntington Bancshares has strategically expanded its operations in Texas and the southeastern U.S., with nearly one-third of its business now derived from these regions. This growth trajectory follows two significant acquisitions: the merger with Veritex Bank and the pending acquisition of Cadence Bank, which will further enhance its presence in key markets like Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston.

Mayo also pointed out that Texas leads in new data center investments, which aligns with Huntington's growth strategy. Following this positive assessment, Huntington's shares experienced a slight increase, contributing to a year-to-date gain of around 4%.

Overall, Huntington's focus on Texas positions it well to capitalize on the state's economic expansion and the ongoing investment boom in technology infrastructure
