On Wednesday, Zoox unveiled the next evolution of its toaster-shaped self-driving vehicle, incorporating features aimed at improving the rider experience, such as higher-quality touchscreens and more comfortable seating. These enhancements are part of Zoox's strategy to expand its market presence and transition to a paid ride service later this year.

Currently, Zoox has provided over 500,000 rides since launching in Las Vegas last September, but it lags significantly behind Waymo, which has surpassed 500,000 weekly paid rides across multiple cities.

Zoox's robotaxis, which lack traditional driving controls and feature an inward-facing seating arrangement, are still in the process of seeking regulatory approval from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to operate commercially. The company is also ramping up production at its San Francisco Bay Area facility, aiming to manufacture 10,000 vehicles annually once fully operational.

This rollout is critical for Zoox as it seeks to establish a foothold in the competitive autonomous vehicle market
