Character.ai announced its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, citing that the costs associated with developing and growing its AI platform have become unsustainable. The company has built a substantial user base over its four years of operation, but the financial strain from high development expenses, potential litigation liabilities, and regulatory challenges has led to insufficient cash flow.

Notably, the company is facing lawsuits, including one from the state of Kentucky, which accuses it of endangering children through its chatbot features.

CEO Colin Adams indicated that a court-supervised sale could maximize value for stakeholders, and the company has already secured a deal with Disney to act as a stalking horse bidder, offering $20 million for some of its intellectual property and transition services.

While Character.ai plans to continue operating during the sale process, there is a possibility that the platform may ultimately be shut down
