Federal Judges Block Alabama’s Congressional District Maps for 2026 Elections Due to Racial Discrimination

On Monday, a three-judge panel ruled against Alabama's congressional district maps, stating they diluted the votes of Black citizens and violated the Voting Rights Act of 1965. This decision follows a Supreme Court directive for the panel to reassess the maps in light of a recent ruling regarding racial gerrymandering in Louisiana.

The judges emphasized that federal law mandates fair voting opportunities for all citizens, free from intentional racial discrimination. This ruling is significant for Democrats, who are aiming to gain a majority in the House during the upcoming elections, as Republicans had initiated these map changes to maintain their slim majority.

The judges, including two appointed by President Trump and one by President Clinton, reiterated their previous findings that the 2023 Plan was intentionally discriminatory. The outcome of this case may ultimately be decided by the Supreme Court, which adds an element of uncertainty as the midterm elections approach
