New York Fed President John Williams Predicts No Additional Rate Hikes in 2027, Contradicting Market Expectations

In an interview with Bloomberg News, John Williams expressed his belief that the Federal Reserve may only need to implement one more rate hike this year and does not anticipate further increases in 2027. This perspective diverges from market sentiment, where traders are pricing in a significant likelihood of at least one additional rate hike by the end of 2027.

According to CME's FedWatch data, there is about a 90% probability that the Fed's overnight rate will be at least half a percentage point higher by the end of 2027. Williams, a permanent voting member of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), noted that while he aligns with the majority of committee members who forecast one more hike, he remains cautious about future economic influences.

He highlighted the need to monitor underlying inflation trends, particularly in light of energy price fluctuations and the impact of tariffs. Williams projected that inflation could approach the Fed's target of 2% by 2027, despite current figures showing a 12-month increase of 3.4% in the personal consumption expenditures price index.

He emphasized the presence of disinflationary forces that could lead to a significant decrease in inflation next year
