Waymo Expands Driverless Ride Services to Four New U.S. Cities

Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet, is set to launch its fully autonomous ride services in San Diego, Las Vegas, Tampa, and Denver, initially for its employees before opening to the public.

This expansion builds on Waymo's existing operations in over 10 cities and reinforces its lead in the autonomous vehicle market, where it currently has a fleet of about 4,000 robotaxis equipped with advanced driving systems. Competitors Tesla and Zoox are also making strides, with Zoox planning to introduce its service in Austin and Miami, while Tesla expands its operations in Texas and Miami.

Despite its lead, Waymo faces challenges, including incidents where its vehicles encountered flooded roads and traffic issues during busy events. The company recently raised $16 billion to support its growth and aims to begin international services in London later this year, with a goal of achieving 1 million weekly trips by year-end after completing over 20 million autonomous rides
