Warren Buffett Plans to Donate All Berkshire Hathaway Shares by 2034, Accelerating Charitable Contributions

Warren Buffett has announced a rapid acceleration in his charitable giving, committing nearly $6 billion in Berkshire Hathaway shares to four family foundations. He stated his goal is to dispose of all his shares within approximately eight years, which implies annual donations exceeding $17 billion, a substantial increase from the $7 billion he donated last year.

This year, he allocated 9 million Class B shares valued at around $4.5 billion to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation and 1 million shares each to the foundations run by his children, totaling just under $500 million each.

Notably, Buffett has ceased donations to the Gates Foundation, which he had previously pledged to support annually, due to emerging issues surrounding the foundation's ties to Jeffrey Epstein and a deteriorating personal relationship with Bill Gates.

This decision reflects a significant shift in Buffett's philanthropic strategy, as he now intends for his wealth to primarily benefit his family foundations, with no further contributions to the Gates Foundation anticipated after his death.

Over the past two decades, Buffett's donations to the Gates Foundation have amounted to nearly $48 billion, with the current value of those shares reaching approximately $159 billion. This change in Buffett's giving strategy could have implications for the philanthropic landscape and the operations of the Gates Foundation moving forward
