Virginia-Based Software Company CEO Lee Reiber Charged with Concealing Russian Ownership from U.S. Government

Lee Reiber, the CEO of Oxygen Forensics, was arrested alongside Oleg Davydov, a Russian national, for allegedly lying to U.S. government agencies about the ownership of the company. The charges stem from claims that the firm, which provides digital forensics software to agencies like the U.S. Secret Service, was secretly controlled by Russian nationals through a holding company in Cyprus.

Prosecutors allege that Reiber misrepresented the company's independence in official documents, which enabled Oxygen to secure a substantial $12 million contract. The case highlights potential risks for U.S. government contracts with foreign ties, especially in the context of heightened scrutiny following the invasion of Ukraine.

Investigators have already seized corporate bank accounts and web domains associated with Oxygen Forensics, indicating a serious legal and operational threat to the company.

The allegations were initially brought to light by a former employee, Max Weissberg, who claimed the company was under Russian control, a statement that Oxygen Forensics has denied while pursuing legal action against Weissberg for defamation. The outcome of this case could have broader implications for the tech sector, particularly for companies with foreign ownership or ties
