During her speech at the World Economic Forum, Christine Lagarde emphasized that Europe's post-war growth model is deteriorating due to weakening pillars such as global trade, affordable energy, and a stable geopolitical environment.

She pointed out that over 2,500 trade restrictions were enacted globally last year, and the U.S. has reduced its commitment to Western security, which has created uncertainty for European supply chains and investments. Lagarde warned that as geopolitical tensions rise, capital flows into Europe are at risk, leading to reduced investment and economic output.

She also cautioned against repeating the mistakes of the dotcom era in the face of the AI revolution, noting that Europe must create favorable conditions for tech investment to thrive.

Despite these challenges, she acknowledged Europe's strengths, including its extensive trade agreements and manufacturing capabilities, and proposed initiatives like 'EU Inc.' to enhance corporate efficiency across the continent.

Marco Forgione from The Chartered Institute of Export and International Trade echoed these sentiments, stressing the need for fundamental political and economic changes to foster growth in Europe amidst increasing global competition
