Analysts Ritholtz Wealth Management highlight ConocoPhillips (COP) as a leading energy stock amid M&A activity

Last week, EQT announced its agreement to acquire Range Resources in an all-stock deal valued at approximately $13 billion, marking a significant move in the ongoing consolidation trend within the oil and gas sector.

ConocoPhillips, one of the largest independent oil and gas producers, has also been active, having merged with Marathon Oil in 2024, resulting in record production levels of 2.25 million barrels of oil per day, including over 900,000 barrels from the Permian Basin.

ConocoPhillips has seen its stock price rise 64% year-to-date, trading at $154, and has returned a substantial $9 billion to shareholders in 2025, representing 45% of its cash flow. Devon Energy, which has also been highlighted for its strong performance, has seen its stock increase by 29% since February and is currently trading at $52.

The company is actively managing its capital returns, having increased its dividend and initiated an $8 billion buyback program. Lastly, Occidental Petroleum, in which Berkshire Hathaway holds a significant stake, has experienced a 55% increase in its stock price year-to-date, supported by strong free cash flow generation.

The overall trend of mergers and acquisitions in the energy sector, coupled with strong financial performances from these companies, suggests a favorable environment for energy stocks, which could attract further investor interest
