Southwest Airlines Announces Plans to Launch Airport Lounges in Four Cities by Late 2027

On September 2, 2026, Southwest Airlines announced plans to introduce a network of airport lounges, with the first locations in Austin, Baltimore, Honolulu, and Nashville. Construction has already begun, and the lounges are expected to open in late 2027.

This initiative is part of a collaboration with Chase, which will issue a new premium Southwest Rapid Rewards credit card to provide access to these lounges. Southwest's executive vice president, Tony Roach, emphasized that the lounges will enhance the customer experience and deepen the airline's long-standing partnership with Chase.

The airline plans to open an additional seven lounges in high-demand markets over the coming years. This move aligns with industry trends, as competitors like Delta and JetBlue have also expanded their lounge offerings to attract higher-spending travelers.

Southwest has been evolving its business model recently, shifting from open seating to assigned seats and introducing baggage fees to boost revenue, particularly in response to pressures from activist investors like Elliott Investment Management
