Senators Elizabeth Warren and Mark Kelly Urge Trump Administration to Address Negative Impact of Tariffs on U.S. Manufacturing

In a letter to key administration officials, Senators Warren and Kelly criticized President Trump's trade policies, asserting that they have led to a decline in blue-collar jobs and an increase in the trade deficit for manufactured goods.

They highlighted that since Trump took office in 2025, the U.S. has lost 108,000 manufacturing jobs, and construction spending on manufacturing has decreased from its peak in summer 2024.

The senators pointed out that Trump's tariffs, intended to protect U.S. manufacturing, have instead resulted in job offshoring, citing examples such as John Paulson's decision to move operations to China and Whirlpool's job cuts while expanding in Mexico. They noted that while the overall trade deficit narrowed in 2025, the deficit in physical goods reached a record high.

The letter also referenced a Supreme Court ruling that struck down many of Trump's tariffs, although he has since imposed new import taxes. Warren and Kelly are seeking explanations from the administration on how they plan to address the negative impacts of these tariffs on American workers and families
