Russia’s Finance Minister Attends G20 Meeting in Bangkok Amid European Opposition

Russia's finance minister, Anton Siluanov, attended a G20 meeting in Bangkok, marking his second in-person appearance since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. This participation tests the limits of U.S. efforts to engage with Moscow while maintaining European support.

Siluanov was accompanied by Bank of Russia Deputy Governor Elizaveta Danilova, and their seating arrangement placed them between delegates from South Korea and the UAE. German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil, who previously expressed strong opposition to Russia's presence, reiterated that Russia cannot simply return to its previous status within the G20.

The meeting concluded without a joint communique, reflecting ongoing divisions among member countries regarding Russia's actions and other global issues. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent did not attend, further indicating the complexities of U.S.-Russia relations.

The discussions highlighted the need for coordinated responses to global challenges, including energy issues and public debt, as leaders prepare for the upcoming G20 summit in Miami in December
