Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev Defends Tokenization of Stocks Amid AMC’s Criticism

Vlad Tenev, CEO of Robinhood, addressed concerns regarding the company's tokenization of stocks, particularly in light of AMC's criticism. He explained that tokenization allows for digital representations of shares on a blockchain, which do not grant outright ownership but create a financial product linked to the underlying asset.

Tenev argued that once a company goes public, it relinquishes control over how its shares can be utilized by other financial entities, stating that other companies can create products referencing those shares without needing permission from the issuer.

This perspective comes after AMC's CEO Adam Aron expressed concerns that tokenization undermines the relationship between companies and their shareholders by allowing exposure to AMC stock without the company's involvement. Tenev acknowledged that holders of tokenized stocks do not have voting rights, as these tokens are structured as debt securities backed by the actual shares.

He did not clarify how Robinhood would handle voting rights associated with the underlying shares, indicating that the company has not made any announcements regarding this aspect. This ongoing discussion raises important questions about the future of stock ownership and the rights of shareholders in a rapidly changing financial environment
