OpenAI Introduces Advertising on ChatGPT Plans in India to Enhance Monetization Ahead of IPO

OpenAI's decision to roll out ads in India, one of its largest markets, is a strategic effort to boost revenue ahead of its anticipated IPO in 2027. The ads are available for free users and those on the 'Go' plan, priced at 399 rupees ($4) per month.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to support wider access to ChatGPT through free and lower-cost tiers, as stated by a company spokesperson. The ad feature is already operational in 38 countries, including major markets like the U.S. and Japan. OpenAI aims to learn from user interactions while ensuring that the ad experience does not compromise the value of ChatGPT.

Notably, ads will not be shown to users identified as under 18. Analysts suggest that monetizing through ads will help OpenAI offset costs associated with query generation and reduce losses, especially as it faces competition from Anthropic, which has a different revenue model focused on enterprise clients.

Ujjwal Chaudhry from Analysys Mason highlighted that online ads constitute over 75% of the $1.18 trillion global ad spending, making this model particularly effective for OpenAI's consumer base. The company plans to launch self-serve ads on September 4, which are popular on social media platforms, allowing advertisers to bid for ad impressions directly.

This strategic pivot comes as OpenAI navigates a competitive landscape, particularly against Anthropic and Google, which have significant resources and differing approaches to monetization
