OpenAI has appointed David Vélez, CEO of Nubank, and Robin Vince, CEO of BNY, to its nonprofit and for-profit boards of directors. This decision comes as OpenAI, valued at over $850 billion, approaches a potential initial public offering, having filed a prospectus with the SEC in June.
The company recently underwent a recapitalization that established a nonprofit structure, the OpenAI Foundation, which holds a controlling stake in the for-profit OpenAI Group PBC, with the nonprofit's equity valued at approximately $130 billion.
Bret Taylor, chair of both boards, emphasized that Vélez and Vince's leadership experience in technology and finance will be crucial as OpenAI aims to expand its impact globally. They will join existing board members, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and other notable figures from various sectors.
This strategic board expansion is expected to bolster OpenAI's operational capabilities and market positioning as it navigates the complexities of an IPO
