A rising number of affluent Chinese are contemplating giving up their citizenship as Beijing intensifies its scrutiny of offshore wealth, particularly following new tax measures introduced in July that could impose a 20% tax on certain offshore incomes and transactions.

Wealth advisors, such as Armand Arton of Arton Capital, report that clients are increasingly willing to sacrifice their Chinese nationality for multiple passports, driven by concerns over taxes and geopolitical uncertainties.

Since July, inquiries from wealthy Chinese about alternative citizenship options have surged by 33%, according to Savory & Partners, with many families exploring Caribbean citizenship due to its quicker processing times compared to European options. Countries like Antigua and Barbuda offer citizenship-by-investment programs that can be completed in as little as six months.

European nations, including Portugal and Italy, remain attractive for residency options, while Singapore is favored for its political stability and wealth management infrastructure. Other emerging destinations include Australia, Malaysia, and parts of Eastern Europe, as affluent families seek to diversify their residency options.

However, experts caution that the interest in overseas citizenship does not always lead to actual renunciations or relocations, highlighting the complexity of these decisions
