On Wednesday, the U.K. government announced measures to impose a midnight curfew and limit features like infinite scrolling for teens aged 16 to 17 on social media platforms.
These changes are set to take effect by Spring 2027 and follow a trial involving over 300 teens and parents, which indicated that an overnight curfew could enhance sleep and concentration while also providing mental health benefits.
The trial tested various interventions, including limiting app usage to 15 minutes a day and removing specific apps, revealing that while participants experienced improved mood and reduced stress, they also faced challenges in maintaining social connections. The overnight curfew emerged as the preferred option to balance health benefits with social interaction needs.
This initiative aligns with previous announcements, including a blanket ban for those under 16, and follows Australia's lead in implementing legal restrictions on social media use for younger users. The proposed regulations will affect major platforms such as Snapchat, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and X
