During a recent appearance on CNBC, CEO Chris Kempczinski expressed concerns about the ongoing difficulties in the restaurant sector, highlighting that both flat traffic and rising inflation are expected to persist.
The company reported a modest U.S. same-store sales growth of only 0.8% in the last quarter, attributed to a decline in customer visits as consumers cut back on dining out due to rising costs across various sectors. The National Restaurant Association noted a net decline in customer traffic for nearly all months from August 2025 to July 2026.
To counteract these trends, McDonald's and its competitors have resorted to offering discounts to attract customers. However, the company is also grappling with increased operational costs, particularly in beef prices, which have nearly doubled over the past five years, alongside rising labor and construction expenses.
Kempczinski emphasized the need for McDonald's to capture market share from rivals in this challenging environment, with further strategic details expected to be revealed during the company's investor day
