Marvell Technology has announced its acquisition of Lumentum, an optical-components manufacturer, in a deal valued at $115 billion. This acquisition is seen as a bold move amid an AI spending boom, with Marvell aiming to enhance its capabilities in the optical components market, which is crucial for high-speed data transfer.
The deal is particularly noteworthy as it comes at a time when Marvell's market value has surged to over $170 billion, largely due to its partnerships with major tech companies like Amazon. The acquisition could strengthen Marvell's competitive position against Broadcom, which has been a key supplier for Google.
Additionally, Lumentum may benefit from a proposed U.S. ban on new Chinese optical transceivers, potentially increasing demand for domestic suppliers. Despite a recent decline in share prices for both companies, the long-term outlook remains optimistic, especially with Marvell's revenue growth from $3 billion in fiscal 2021 to $8.2 billion in fiscal 2026.
This acquisition is Marvell's largest since its $10 billion purchase of Inphi in 2021, indicating its aggressive expansion strategy in the AI and optical components sectors
