Several European countries, including the U.K., France, Spain, and Italy, are facing extreme heat conditions, prompting the issuance of red weather alerts. The U.K.'s Met Office has warned that temperatures could reach at least 39 degrees Celsius, with the potential to break June temperature records.

Mark Sidaway, deputy chief forecaster, emphasized the severe health impacts expected from this heatwave, which could affect even those not typically vulnerable to high temperatures. In France, at least 18 fatalities have been reported, and hundreds of schools have closed due to the intense heat.

Bordeaux recorded temperatures of 42 degrees Celsius, and Meteo France noted an unprecedented number of regions under red heat warnings. This heat wave is the second in two months, highlighting the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events attributed to climate change.

Richard Allan, a climate science professor, pointed out that while heat waves in June may be expected, such high temperatures are unprecedented for the U.K. until recently. He warned that rising greenhouse gas levels are likely to exacerbate the severity of heat waves and contribute to droughts and extreme rainfall events
