Harvard University's endowment reached nearly $68 billion, marking its strongest return in five years, as reported in the annual financial report. This growth of 27.1% surpassed the S&P 500's total return of 22.3% by 4.8 percentage points.
The endowment, managed by the Harvard Management Company, benefited from significant investments, including a $2.2 billion stake in SpaceX, which is now its largest holding.
However, the university faces challenges, including a 19.5% decline in federally-sponsored research revenue, which fell to $509 million, and an impending increase in the federal excise tax on net investment income from 1.4% to 8%, expected to cost around $300 million annually.
Despite these headwinds, Harvard's leadership remains optimistic about the institution's future, emphasizing the importance of strong investment returns for gradual support of university operations
