On Wednesday, government websites in countries like the Netherlands and Finland were taken offline due to critical vulnerabilities identified in PHP, a programming language that powers approximately 75% of websites.

PHP developers announced the vulnerabilities on Tuesday and released a fix shortly after, but the urgency prompted many agencies to act preemptively to protect their systems from potential exploitation. Cybersecurity experts warned that these vulnerabilities could allow hackers to target millions of servers, especially as AI-assisted hacking techniques become more prevalent.

The Dutch cybersecurity agency and various organizations, including the Port of Rotterdam and several hospitals, took their sites offline as a precaution. In Finland, state IT services also shut down public network services.

The widespread reliance on PHP, which underlies major platforms like WordPress, raises concerns about the security of numerous websites, particularly those managed by individuals or small organizations with limited resources. As the situation develops, the emphasis remains on the importance of promptly applying security updates to mitigate risks
