Frontier Airlines, along with four other budget carriers, has announced plans to implement in-flight Wi-Fi using SpaceX's Starlink technology, with the first equipped Airbus expected to be operational in early 2027.
This move is particularly noteworthy as Frontier has been one of the last U.S. airlines to adopt in-flight internet, having previously hesitated due to concerns about the added weight of the necessary equipment. While the airline has not confirmed whether the service will be complimentary, major airlines that have partnered with Starlink typically offer free Wi-Fi to loyalty program members.
The decision to enhance in-flight services comes as budget airlines face pressure to improve their offerings in response to revenue growth seen by larger competitors. The group of airlines entering this partnership, which includes Frontier, Volaris, Wizz, Jetsmart, and Cebu Pacific, are all backed by Indigo Partners, a private equity firm led by Bill Franke.
This strategic move aligns with Frontier's plans to introduce first-class seating next year, indicating a shift towards a more premium service model to attract a broader customer base
