EnQuest, a U.K. energy exploration and production company, has expressed interest in purchasing BP's oil and gas interests in the North Sea, as confirmed by CEO Amjad Bseisu during an interview with CNBC. BP initiated the sale process for its U.K. North Sea business on July 31, marking a notable retreat from the region where it has been active for approximately 60 years.

Bseisu emphasized that there remains a 'tremendous opportunity' in the U.K. oil and gas sector, particularly as the country now imports about half of its energy, leading to increased costs. He called for government support to further develop domestic oil and gas resources.

EnQuest's recent financial performance shows an adjusted pre-tax profit of $54.6 million for the first half of the year, with revenues of $529.9 million and a 9% increase in production. This potential acquisition could reshape the competitive landscape in the North Sea, where only a few companies are left to consider such assets
