On Wednesday, DoorDash launched its drone-delivery program, DoorDash Air, after obtaining certification from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration to conduct commercial drone deliveries. This initiative is part of DoorDash's strategy to lessen its dependence on human couriers and enhance its logistics capabilities.
The program is being developed by DoorDash Labs, the company's robotics and autonomy division, and will eventually be integrated into its existing delivery app. Although DoorDash is creating its own aircraft and drone infrastructure, it has not disclosed a timeline for when these services will be commercially available.
This move positions DoorDash alongside other drone delivery operators like Amazon's Prime Air, Alphabet's Wing, and Zipline, which have been expanding their operations in recent years. Additionally, DoorDash plans to continue collaborating with its current drone delivery partners, Wing and Flytrex, while it builds its own drone capabilities.
