Diesel Prices in California Surge to $7 per Gallon Amid Global Supply Disruptions

Diesel prices in California have reached $7 per gallon, marking a significant increase of 37% compared to last year and about 30 cents higher than a month ago, according to AAA data. This rise is attributed to supply disruptions from wars in Ukraine and Iran, which have collectively impacted around 8% of the global diesel supply needed to meet the daily demand of 28 million barrels.

The situation is exacerbated by sanctions affecting Russian refinery operations and reduced exports from the Middle East. As farmers prepare for harvest and freight transportation ramps up ahead of the holiday season, the increased diesel costs are expected to contribute to higher prices for consumers, particularly in grocery and retail sectors.

Analysts like Kevin Book from ClearView Energy Partners and Bob McNally from Rapidan Energy emphasize the critical role of diesel in the economy, noting that its rising prices pose significant inflationary risks.

Additionally, refiners are currently enjoying high profit margins, with the margin for converting crude to diesel reaching $100 per barrel, surpassing the current price of U.S. crude oil at around $85. The unique regulatory environment in California, which includes special diesel formulations and higher taxes, further contributes to the state's elevated fuel prices
