SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has set an ambitious goal for launching orbital data centers by late 2027, but experts suggest that true scalability may not be achievable until the 2030s. Evelyn Chow, a portfolio manager at Neuberger, emphasizes the need for substantial satellite launches and improved connectivity over the next four to five years before these data centers can be realistically considered.
Blaine Curcio, founder of Orbital Gateway Consulting, agrees with this timeline but notes that SpaceX has previously exceeded expectations in satellite launches. Key challenges include cooling systems that can function in the vacuum of space, the rapid obsolescence of technology due to fast-evolving GPUs, and the necessity for high-volume data transfer back to Earth.
Rohit Jha, CEO of Transcelestial, highlights that without effective communication with AI systems, these data centers would be ineffective. Additionally, achieving hyperscale operations may require another five to seven years and potentially nuclear power for energy needs
