On Wednesday, crude oil prices experienced a sharp decline, with U.S. West Texas Intermediate falling 8.3% to $88.12 per barrel and Brent crude dropping 8.7% to $94.62. Vice President JD Vance attributed the Republican losses in the midterm elections to the war against Iran, stating that the president acknowledged this connection.

The Democratic victories in both the House and Senate may empower the party to pressure President Donald Trump to reconsider the war, which has contributed to rising gasoline and diesel prices. Andy Lipow, president of Lipow Oil Associates, noted that the election results could lead the market to anticipate a potential deal regarding the conflict.

Additionally, Trump's recent announcement to cut some funding to Israel could influence negotiations with Iran. The oil market had previously priced in risks of escalation, gaining over 10% in October, but has since fallen more than 14% this week as both U.S. and Iranian officials expressed openness to diplomatic solutions.

Rebecca Babin, a senior energy trader at CIBC, remarked that the market's reaction may be overly emotional in light of the unexpected election outcomes.

Despite the current sentiment, Bob McNally, president of Rapidan Energy, cautioned that the likelihood of military escalation remains, as Iran's position appears steadfast and Trump is unlikely to abandon his goal of preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear capabilities
