Anthropic, an artificial intelligence lab, revealed in an S-1 filing that it holds $112.4 billion in cash and $19.3 billion in short-term investments as of June 30, totaling $131.7 billion. This amount exceeds that of major companies like Amazon, SpaceX, Meta, and Microsoft, and is second only to Berkshire Hathaway and Alphabet among non-bank U.S. firms.
The company is expected to raise over $100 billion in its upcoming IPO, which could increase its cash reserves to more than $230 billion. However, Anthropic's financial situation is complicated by significant future commitments, including $321.4 billion in estimated future lease obligations and $265.6 billion in expected minimum payments, totaling over half a trillion dollars.
These obligations will begin to materialize in the coming years, and the company has already entered into new agreements that add approximately $245 billion in future payment obligations.
While Anthropic's cash position is impressive, its future expenses related to computing power, which totaled $8.95 billion in the first half of the year, indicate that it must continue to generate cash through fundraising or profits to meet its commitments
