Carvana shares have fallen over 10% this week, primarily driven by a federal investigation into Mark Walter, who holds an indirect 8% stake in the company through CVAN Holdings LLC. The investigation, reported by the Wall Street Journal, focuses on whether Walter concealed financial relationships while managing over $20 billion through his insurance companies.
This scrutiny has led to investor jitters, particularly as Walter's financial dealings come under the spotlight. Additionally, insider selling by a Carvana director, who sold 30,000 shares for approximately $2.1 million, has further pressured the stock.
Walter, who is also the CEO of Guggenheim Partners and has recently sold the LA Lakers for $12.5 billion amid the probe, raises questions about his ability to maintain his stake in Carvana if he needs to liquidate assets.
Investor Herb Greenberg noted that Walter's connections to a private consumer-products company, which issued Carvana a warrant to purchase shares, had previously gone unnoticed but are now critical given the investigation. Carvana has a history of overcoming challenges, but the current situation poses significant risks to its stock performance and investor confidence
