Bain Capital to Acquire Bubble Tea Chain Gong cha Amid Regulatory Challenges for Rival MBK Partners

Bain Capital has successfully agreed to purchase Gong cha from TA Associates, a move that positions Bain to capitalize on the growing bubble tea market. This acquisition is particularly significant as it comes at a time when MBK Partners, a major competitor, is under scrutiny from South Korean regulators due to issues surrounding its former portfolio company, Homeplus.

The regulatory pressures have made it challenging for MBK to pursue the acquisition of Gong cha, especially given the brand's substantial operations in South Korea. Gong cha, known for its diverse offerings of tea and fruit-based beverages, operates over 2,200 stores globally, including in the U.S. and Central America.

Bain Capital plans to leverage Gong cha's established presence to accelerate growth in both Japan and South Korea, as well as expand its footprint in the U.S. This strategic acquisition not only enhances Bain's portfolio but also underscores the competitive dynamics within the bubble tea sector, particularly as regulatory environments can significantly impact market opportunities
