At the 79th Cannes Film Festival, Cristian Mungiu's 'Fjord' received the prestigious Palme d'Or, making him one of only ten filmmakers to win this award twice, following his earlier win for '4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days' in 2007.

The film, which explores themes of political polarization through the story of Romanian Evangelicals in Norway facing child services intervention, garnered significant acclaim amidst a festival that saw limited breakout films.

Neon, the film's distributor, continues its remarkable streak with this win, following last year's success with 'It Was Just an Accident' and the 2024 Oscar-winning film 'Anora.' The Grand Prix was awarded to Andrey Zvyagintsev's 'Minotaur,' a thriller set against the backdrop of Russia's war with Ukraine.

Despite a lackluster festival overall, the awards are likely to elevate the profiles of the winners, similar to last year's Cannes, which produced numerous Oscar nominees.

The jury, led by Park Chan-wook, also recognized other films and performances, including best director awards for Pawel Pawlikowski and the duo Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, and shared acting awards for Virginie Efira and Tao Okamoto, as well as Emmanuel Macchia and Valentin Campagne.

The absence of Barbra Streisand, who was to receive an honorary Palme d'Or due to a knee injury, was noted during the ceremony, which still celebrated her contributions to cinema
