On Wednesday, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) revealed a strategic partnership with Anthropic, committing to invest up to $5 billion in the artificial intelligence company in the future. As part of this agreement, Anthropic will utilize 2 gigawatts of AMD's Instinct MI450 Series GPUs within AMD Helios rack-scale solutions, with the first gigawatt set to be deployed in the first half of next year.
AMD CEO Lisa Su expressed enthusiasm about deepening the partnership and scaling up AI capabilities. AMD has significantly benefited from the AI boom, producing GPUs essential for training AI models and managing large workloads, positioning itself as a competitor to Nvidia, the current market leader.
This partnership follows AMD's previous agreements with other AI firms, including a notable deal with OpenAI, where AMD issued warrants for up to 160 million shares of its stock. Anthropic has been expanding its infrastructure to meet the growing demand for its AI products, particularly its Claude models, which have strained its existing capabilities.
The company has also secured substantial agreements with SpaceX, Amazon, Google, and Broadcom, and is in discussions with Meta for additional computing resources. Anthropic's rapid growth is underscored by its revenue surge to a run-rate of $47 billion, up from $10 billion last year, and its recent $965 billion valuation, setting the stage for a potential IPO this year
