Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is set to ship its first rack-scale artificial intelligence system, Helios, to customers including Microsoft, which will utilize it in its data centers. This development positions AMD as a direct competitor to Nvidia's established AI systems, particularly the Grace Blackwell and Vera Rubin models.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella emphasized the importance of Helios in expanding Azure's infrastructure to support next-generation AI applications. The Helios system integrates AMD's GPUs, CPUs, networking, and software, aiming to provide a lower total cost of ownership compared to Nvidia's offerings.
Analysts suggest that while Nvidia currently dominates the data center GPU market with over 95% share, AMD's Helios could help it capture a larger portion, potentially reaching 20-25% in the future. AMD's revenue from data center AI is projected to grow significantly, with expectations of tens of billions starting in 2027.
The Helios system is a culmination of AMD's strategic acquisitions and technological advancements, including its EPYC CPUs and Instinct GPUs.
