Zoox reported a software recall affecting 105 of its robotaxis after an incident in Las Vegas where a vehicle drove into heavy smoke at an emergency scene. The company notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on July 8, following the June 20 event where the vehicle, unoccupied at the time, encountered smoke that obscured an active fire scene.

Although the vehicle attempted to steer away and stop, it raised alarms about the vehicle's ability to detect hazardous conditions. No injuries were reported, and Zoox stated this was the only incident of its kind. The recall comes amid increased scrutiny from the NHTSA, which has urged autonomous vehicle developers to ensure their vehicles do not interfere with first responders.

This directive follows a pattern of incidents involving autonomous vehicles obstructing emergency services. Zoox, which operates driverless vehicles in select U.S. cities, is under pressure to enhance its software capabilities, especially as it competes with Waymo, which has a larger fleet and has also faced its own recall issues recently.

The situation underscores the challenges facing the autonomous vehicle industry as it navigates safety regulations and public trust
