Analysts expect downside for AI stocks as midterm elections raise regulatory concerns

Following the midterm elections, tech stocks experienced a sharp sell-off, with Nvidia down 9.3%, AMD 17.3%, and Tesla 10.8%, among others. This decline reflects investor anxiety over potential regulatory challenges posed by a Democrat-controlled Congress, particularly regarding the construction of AI data centers.

Analysts, including Kyle Rodda from Capital.com, noted that the elections could slow the pace of planned data centers, which are crucial for the AI boom. The International Data Center Authority reported that between January 2024 and May 2026, over $170 billion in AI data center projects have already faced delays or cancellations due to community opposition.

Dan Ives from Yorkville Ives & Co. emphasized that the elections would likely impede the development of 800 to 1,000 planned data centers, which are essential for advancing AI technology. Despite Goldman Sachs projecting $7.6 trillion in AI-related capital spending from 2026 to 2031, the current political landscape raises questions about the sustainability of this growth.

The situation is further complicated by rising interest rates and previous overspending in the sector, leading to a cautious outlook for tech investors as they navigate the implications of the midterm results on the AI infrastructure buildout
