Wendy's stock experienced significant volatility, temporarily halting trading as it rose sharply after the Financial Times reported that Trian Fund Management, led by Nelson Peltz, is working on a takeover proposal for the burger chain.
This comes in the wake of Wendy's sixth consecutive quarter of same-store sales declines, which has allowed Burger King to surpass it as the second-largest burger chain in the U.S. Trian, which holds a 7.85% stake in Wendy's, is reportedly collaborating with other investors, including BlueFive Capital and the Flynn Group, a major franchisee.
The company's struggles have been exacerbated by frequent changes in leadership, leading to unclear strategies for recovery. Peltz, who has a long-standing relationship with Wendy's, previously explored a takeover in 2022 but ultimately decided against it. His involvement and the backing from other investors may signal a renewed effort to revitalize the brand and address its performance issues
