Waymo, a subsidiary of Alphabet, revealed plans to initiate robotaxi rides in Germany, marking its entry into the European market and its third international location after London and Tokyo. The company will begin phased testing in Munich within weeks, aiming for a public launch by the end of 2027.
This testing will focus on creating high-definition street maps, training specialists in autonomous technology, and adapting its software to Munich's unique driving conditions. Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana emphasized the significance of this expansion, highlighting Munich's reputation as a center for mobility and engineering.
Currently, Waymo operates in 11 U.S. cities and is expanding to 19 more, having recently announced new services in San Diego, Las Vegas, Tampa, and Denver. With nearly 221 million fully autonomous miles logged as of March, Waymo continues to solidify its dominance in the robotaxi sector, although the industry remains in its nascent stages
