Warner Bros. Discovery announced record revenue growth in its streaming segment, with streaming revenue surpassing $3 billion in the second quarter, up 10% from the previous year.
The company attributed this success to the popularity of HBO Max and its content offerings, including hit shows like 'Euphoria' and 'House of the Dragon.' CEO David Zaslav emphasized the importance of creative excellence in driving financial results.
However, the company faced challenges, including a 16% negative impact on advertising revenue growth due to the loss of NBA games from its media rights package. Discovery's overall revenue for the quarter was $8.72 billion, an 11% decline from the previous year, falling short of Wall Street's expectations.
The net income dropped significantly to $149 million, down from $1.58 billion a year prior, largely due to pre-acquisition adjustments and restructuring costs.
The proposed merger with Paramount, which aims to combine HBO Max and Paramount+, is currently facing legal challenges but could create a streaming service with approximately 200 million subscribers, enhancing competitive positioning against larger industry players
