Wall Street Anticipates Midterm Elections with Potential Market Implications Amidst Rising Borrowing Costs

According to Man Group, traders are pricing the midterm elections as a routine event, expecting a clear Democratic victory with a 66% chance of winning both the House and Senate. The S&P 500 options indicate a volatility level about 20% higher than usual for the day after the elections, reflecting some uncertainty but less than what is typically seen during presidential elections.

A decisive Democratic win could boost sectors like healthcare and retail, while negatively impacting capital markets stocks, including investment banks. Conversely, a Republican sweep could reverse these trends.

However, the potential for a delayed election result poses a risk, as past elections have shown that close races can take weeks to resolve, which could further unsettle markets already on edge due to high government borrowing costs and concerns over AI.

Adam Keogh from Man Group highlighted that the current market pricing does not adequately account for the possibility of a contested count, which could lead to significant market volatility
