Visa announced its acquisition of BioCatch, a fraud detection startup, for $2.4 billion in cash, aiming to bolster its cybersecurity measures as financial institutions face increasing threats from AI-powered scams and account takeovers.
BioCatch's behavioral biometrics platform, which analyzes user behavior to differentiate between legitimate users and fraudsters, will be integrated into Visa's offerings. This acquisition is part of Visa's broader strategy to expand its value-added services, which include fraud prevention and cybersecurity solutions, a rapidly growing segment for the company.
With an estimated $1 trillion lost annually to scams and account takeovers globally, this move is crucial for Visa as it seeks to protect its vast network of nearly 14,500 financial institutions that process over 329 billion transactions worth more than $17 trillion each year. The deal is expected to close by the end of Visa's fiscal second quarter in 2027, pending regulatory approvals.
