On Friday, telecommunications stocks experienced a sharp sell-off following SpaceX's announcement of its agreement to purchase a nationwide spectrum portfolio from Grain Management. This acquisition is intended to facilitate the expansion of SpaceX's Starlink internet service into mobile markets. As a result, Verizon's stock plummeted approximately 7%, marking its worst trading day since 2002.
T-Mobile's shares fell by 12%, while AT&T saw a decline of around 10%. In contrast, SpaceX's stock rose slightly by about 1%. The spectrum deal involves a license portfolio of up to 14 megahertz of paired spectrum in the 800 MHz band.
FCC Chair Brendan Carr commented on the deal, stating that increased competition in the spectrum market is beneficial for American consumers and projected that over $100 billion worth of spectrum would enter the market over the next two years.
He emphasized that this competition would lead to market dynamics where companies will strive to out-compete and innovate, although he refrained from predicting specific winners or losers in the evolving landscape
