The Department of Justice announced that Swapnadip Roy and Vicky Ramancha face multiple charges related to a conspiracy to smuggle counterfeit Ozempic, a weight-loss drug manufactured by Novo. Despite FDA warnings and seizures of fake drugs earlier in 2023, the alleged scheme continued from July 2023 to April 2024.

Roy, who was extradited from Italy, and Ramancha, who remains at large, are accused of distributing counterfeit products that misled consumers into believing they were purchasing legitimate medication. If convicted, they could face up to 71 years in prison.

The case is particularly significant as the popularity of GLP-1 medications like Ozempic has surged, with Gallup reporting that 11% of U.S. adults were using these drugs for weight loss by 2026, up from 3% in 2024. Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva emphasized the dangers of counterfeit drugs, stating that they undermine the integrity of the pharmaceutical supply and threaten public health.

This incident underscores the ongoing challenges in combating counterfeit pharmaceuticals, which could impact consumer trust and the broader pharmaceutical market
