Trump’s Energy Cost Promises Fall Short as Gasoline and Diesel Prices Surge Ahead of Election

President Trump, during his re-election campaign, pledged to cut energy prices significantly, claiming he would bring gas prices below $2 a gallon within 12 months. However, as voters approach the polls, gas prices are averaging $4.20 a gallon, nearly 40% higher than last year, while diesel prices have surged to $6.32 a gallon, a 70% increase.

These price hikes are attributed to geopolitical tensions, particularly following Trump's military actions in the Middle East, which have disrupted oil flows. Analysts, including Patrick De Haan from GasBuddy, note that fuel prices are at their highest ever for an election day.

The White House argues that gas prices, when adjusted for inflation, have been higher in past elections, but the current situation is causing political pressure on Trump, especially from Republican constituents in agricultural states like Iowa. In response, Trump has taken measures such as allowing tax-exempt diesel for truckers and proposing an $8 billion relief program for farmers.

However, a controversial deal with Russia to export diesel has drawn criticism. As crude oil prices rise ahead of the election, the market is wary of potential escalations in conflict, which could further impact fuel prices during the holiday season
