The Trump administration reported that it has refunded about $100 billion of the tariff revenue collected from the IEEPA tariffs, which were imposed in 2025 and later struck down by the Supreme Court. This refund represents around 60% of the total $166 billion collected from these tariffs.
Following the Supreme Court ruling, federal Judge Richard Eaton mandated that the collected tariffs be refunded to importers. In response, the administration has implemented a new system called CAPE to manage these refunds, which has processed nearly $129 billion in potential and certified refunds.
However, the refund process is complicated by a lawsuit from Freestyle World, a California importer, seeking class action status for smaller businesses facing difficulties in obtaining their refunds. The government argues that the class certification request is invalid.
Despite the progress made, over 330,000 importers who paid IEEPA tariffs on more than 53 million entries still await refunds, indicating that the administration's efforts are far from complete
